Volume Three of the 'Portable Music' series, by Herv.
With Portable 3, Ewan Herv returns for a second time to the Nintendo DS. The ROM in question this time is Korg's M01, which emulates the nostalgic sound of the Korg M1 (a '90s synthesizer workstation enthused over by pub rock bands and IDM luminaries alike). In the absence of any sound editing capacity in the M01, melody and rhythm are king.
In 2004 Herv received a large shipment of vinyl records
of Library Music, gifted from the closing sound department of an English university. This collection sparked an interest in true electronic whimsy, and in the playful work of composers liberated by the anonymity of stock music catalogues.
Portable 3 draws the listener back to early electronic music experiences via Teletext services such as RTÉ’s Aertel and BBC’s Ceefax. Got up too early for cartoons on a Saturday morning? Portable 3 is the quintessential soundtrack for munching on your favourite Hyper-Choco-Mallow-Honey-Frosted-Sugar-Cruncho Bytes. To complete your listening experience, Boy Scout Audio recommends a thorough browse of RTÉ's Aertel pages on a portable internet device.
